Amazon.co.uk Review
With the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (memorably portrayed by Johnny Depp) earning legions of fans right across the globe, the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy has proven to be one of the most popular series of films in recent times. Fortunately, there's good reason too.

The trilogy starts off with the best of the three films. The Curse Of The Black Pearl is a superb piece of blockbuster movie making, delivering lots of laughs, some fabulous set pieces and a core of good, old-fashioned swashbuckling action. With a terrific supporting cast, led by the likes of Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, its running time simply zips by in a flash, and there's plenty of incentive to hit the play button again once the credits roll.

The second movie in the series, Dead Man's Chest was more commercially successful, but it's not quite as strong a film. Nonetheless, there's still plenty to enjoy, including Bill Nighy's stunning Davy Jones (the special effects there are something to behold). And it earns extra bonus points for a terrific final twist in the end reel.

And then we arrive at the closing part of the trilogy, At World's End. This is arguably the most bloated, with a nigh-on three hour running time, but it does pack a lot in. Multiple Johnny Depps for starters, along with some terrific action too.

While the three parts of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy may thus be a little uneven, its nonetheless a collection of films with plenty to recommend. The first part sails away with the top honours, but there's little doubt that all three are set to entertain audiences for many years to come. --Jon Foster

2 out of 5 stars All at sea   August 26, 2010

Before any of you start getting into an apoplexy let me start my saying this is MY opinion and not a statement of fact, geddit? Like The Matrix, this franchise started off quite well, with a decent plot, a tight script, some humour and a good pace. So for the Curse of the Black Pearl I'd give 4 stars. However, as with the Matrix sequels the POTC sequels are messy, overlong, incomprehnsible, talky, slow moving and ultimately very boring esp with the third one where it seems half the film's spent in Davy Jones' locker. While Depp's camp theatricality gets tiresome at least he has some presence unlike his two co-leads. Bloom as all the charisma of a limp cabbage and Keira Knightly has all the sex appeal of a speccy computer nerd. A bad case of miscasting if ever there was. It'd have been much better to have some feisty babe, similar to Lucy Lawless in her Xena Warrior Princess days. It's unforuntate that studios get so greedy that they'll fob the public off with sequels (or occasionally prequels - as with Star Wars)that are almost always way inferior shoddy rush jobs. So for both POTC sequels, just 1 star apiece.

5 out of 5 stars swashbuckling fun   August 13, 2010

Very enjoyable swashbuckling fun, you can watch one after another if you have the time. The music is great, the characters larger than life. It's pure escapism. The price is brilliant too. Can't fault it. Love it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Slightly less contrast compared to DVD version, but great quality overall   July 29, 2010

What more can I add when talking about the Pirates movies? They're just damn good fun and if you can buy this demonstration quality boxset for an acceptable price, you should.

Some technical things: the transfer is (obviously) sharper than the DVD, but I must say there is definitely less contrast to be seen. This leads to some unrealistic shadows, especially when combined with special effects. You can see that the digital effect shadows are different than the real ones. But this is a minor complaint.

But it's not a real boxset. Here's why. Somehow it's disappointing that the Blu-rays containing first two movies have a totally different menu layout (and better) compared to the third. Considering the possibilities of Blu-ray, this is just a big miss. It seems that the third movie (At World's End) was the first to appear on Blu-ray, after which the other two older ones(Curse of the Black Pearl & Dead Man's Chest) followed. Somewhere on the way someone decided the menus could be better, so changed it for the new discs that contained the first two movies, but didn't revise this on the Blu-ray 'At World's End'. It really feels as if the three Blu-ray discs that were produced by then were wrapped together in a happy pirate carton.
