Amazon.co.uk Review Picking up after the dramatic events of its maiden season, the second series of The Wire achieves something really rather special: it even manages to outclass the first. For those fresh to the show, surely the best, most intelligent piece of scripted drama to emerge from America in the last decade, the actual premise is fairly simple. Across the thirteen episodes of its season, it charts one case, and the numerous influences upon it. So it devotes roughly equal time to those committing the crimes as it does to those chasing them. This time, the Baltimore Police Department have twin worries. There's the continuing, festering narrative of events from the season before, along with a new problem when a container of dead bodies turns up at the nearby docks. After initial battles over whose statistics the bodies will be attributed to, a fresh case begins for the embattled officers of the Major Crimes Unit. Yet season two is about much more than the case itself. Bubbling under the surface are characters with real problems, that take their toll on the day-to-day, while at the docks themselves there are union struggles underway, which also have a part to play. Thanks to, frankly, superb scripting, these various narrative threads are woven together quite brilliantly, and the result is perhaps the finest series of The Wire to date. And that's no small feat. If you're one of the many who have let The Wire fly under their radar thus far, then you're urged to rectify that. Clearly season one is the logical starting point, but begin your adventure in the knowledge that this second series is simple exceptional. For the rest of the US television industry, this is the standard to aim for. --Simon Brew

Interesting and entertaining December 20, 2009 christine duffelen (sheffield, uk) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
As expected, series 2 is pretty much as gripping as series 1. I like the way it takes the story onto another level by taking a different perspective on the same issue; I presume this will continue through the subsequent series. Also the broader take on internal politics.
I like the 1hour episode format of HBO shows as it fits neatly into my lifestyle!
Impressive 2nd season October 30, 2009 G. Smith Season One of the Wire was a revelation in terms of tv for me. It was so different from what I'd seen before; the way you saw both sides of the storyline, the cop side and the 'villian' side in equal measure, with all characters well rounded and often in some way likeable despite their situation/role.
Season two follows this pattern but the location moves to Baltimore's docks and a union local whose leader is using money funded by sumggling to pay lobbyists to try and improve the docks prospects. Most of the police characters return for this season and some of the major players in the drug ring of season one.
Once again the characters are beautifully written, expertly played and always believable. It's difficult not devour these box sets in one/two sittings because they're that good, that addictive. But its best to try for two at a time so you can savour them properly.
The Wire Season 2 October 25, 2009 pb752 (U.K.) I've given this 5 stars as it's the maximum that can be awarded on here. That's an understatement really, as I think this series is just so unbelievably good that it goes completely off the scale.
I enjoyed watching the second season and thought it was even better than the first. I really liked the scenes set in and around the docks. There were loads of new characters and the banter and leg pulling between all the union workers was especially good.
The writing in this series is just brilliant. I love all the wise cracks and funny lines that the various actors have to say. There are so many really great characters too. Two particular favourites of mine are "Mr Super Cool" Stringer Bell and of course Omar.
I'm really looking forward to watching the third season.
Brilliant October 17, 2009 Edward Laing (London)
I have come late to this series and find it all quite mesmerising. Interestingly I find that a lot of other people of a certain age are also watching it in retrospect.
Although I needed the subtitles for the later seasons, I could follow all the dialogue on Season 2
The Wire......has got even better! October 15, 2009 M. Higgins (Ireland) Hard to believe but Season 2 is even better than Season 1.
Gripping stuff from start to finish. The extra (3rd)dimension really helps the series zip along.
You still have the old fav's, Avon, Stringer Bell, McNulty, Daniels etc. but the addition of the Union boys & the Greeks really add that extra bit of spice!
Can't say there was a weak episode in the 12!
Well worth it.
