Amazon.co.uk Review
How would the modern face of policing cope in the land of The Sweeney? That's the question posed by Life on Mars, as DI Sam Tyler (John Simm) a modern cop transported back to 1973 after a nasty car accident. There, he finds himself dealing with the significantly rougher attitudes and behaviours of "old-school" British policing, as exemplified by his new boss, DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister). It's a fish-out-of-water story, as Tyler attempts to teach his new colleagues some very modern methods, while attempting to get used to sheepskin jackets, wide lapels and man-made fibres.

This first series of the hugely successful BBC programme sets the scene and introduces the characters that make up Tyler's new world, but stumbles a bit by trying too hard to explain exactly how he got there (the "coma" subplot just gets in the way). Life on Mars is at its best when Glenister is on screen--he's bigoted, chauvinistic and aggressive, and goes through each episode alternately bellowing or scowling. But he's a product of his times, and in his heart, all he wants is to catch the bad guys. For Tyler, it's all about the means, while for Hunt it's all about the ends. They may not like each other much, but their on-screen chemistry is undeniable, and just one of the things that make this excellent series so watchable. --Ted Kord

5 out of 5 stars Life on Mars: well worth watching   June 26, 2010

I choose to buy these DVD sets for academic purposes, actually (analysis of TV language), but then I really got involved in watching both series and enjoying the story lines. The US series copies much of the original UK one, but they are quite enjoyable all the same, even together! I will say that the initial episodes are the best, but still I am surprised it didn't last more than two years in England and only one year in the States. An original and entertaining series, even if it is obvious that the authors borrow a lot from similar stories from the past, but these two series nonetheless stand up quite well and are well worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic original series   May 11, 2010

A hugely enjoyable and original series. Sam Tyler is hit by a car and knocked unconscious. He wakes up and finds himself transported somehow to 1973. The series focuses on how he deals with being in such a bizarre situation and the culture clash as modern policing collides with the more devil may care attitude to policing in the 70's, leading to numerous humorous scenes. John Simms is excellent as Sam Tyler but it's Philip Glenister who steals the show as DCI Hunt, Tyler's brash boss.

5 out of 5 stars Life On Mars ( Series One ) Review   May 8, 2010

When Life On Mars first aired on TV I unfortunately formed a totally incorrect opinion of the format purely from the TV trailers and pre-series advertising. Therefore I didn't even bother to give the series a chance.

Life On Mars, if I remember correctly, was billed as a take on the 70's popular hard-hitting police drama The Sweeney. In my view the two could not be more different.

Having just watched Life On Mars on DVD in four two hour sessions (8 episodes in total) over a 4-week period, I have already become completely attached to the five main characters that in their each individual way are all totally credible people and are excellently portrayed by the actors.

Each episode has it's own separate sub story line running on top of the main series story line being that Sam Tyler a modern day Manchester police detective is involved in a car accident that leaves him in a coma however, whilst in that coma somehow he has woken up in 1973 where he finds himself still working as a detective with Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt as his superior. Tyler who is completely stunned by this backwards time slip not only has to come to terms with 1970's crude policing methods and prejudices, but also the fact that he is now existing more than three decades in the past with no immediately visible way to get back to his former life.

Tyler constantly comes into conflict with Hunt a down to earth, matter of fact, hard drinking, sexist DCI and his men during the course of their crime solving duties which usually ends in a fist fight, but even though there is a massive cultural divide between them they somehow have an unspoken respect for each other that keeps the mood of each episode buoyant and balanced.

Excellent acting and equally exciting stories make this series an absolute must to view especially if you grew up during or fondly remember the period, particularly the fashion and cars of the era.

I can strongly recommend Life On Mars it has been extremely entertaining. It is a serious drama, interspersed with lighthearted humour and is very easily warmed too.

I've absolutely loved this series. Gene Hunt has to be one of the finest characters created for tv. The period details are great. Best of all are the hilarious car chases in Hunt's Cortina, and, of course the fight scenes!

If you haven't seen it before - highly recommended

I managed to miss this completely when it was on TV but having heard so many people rave about it, I thought I'd buy the series. So glad I did as it lives up to all the hype - nostalgic, amusing, clever and well plotted - a combination of good 'cop' drama and a mystery. I've now bought myself series 2 and am thoroughly enjoying it too. Well worth watching.
