Amazon.co.uk Review
Even if you missed the first three seasons (the character guides and thorough episode recaps on HBO's website are recommended), and with only one season left, it's not too late to get in under The Wire. In fact, season 4 is an accessible introduction for those who know The Wire only by its street cred as arguably the very best show on television. For them especially, this season will be, as befitting its theme, a real education. Without resorting to melodramatics that other ratings-challenged series employ to gain that frustratingly elusive audience, The Wire shakes things up this season in a way that is true to the series and its characters. A major character, Dominic West's McNulty, plays a minor role as a contented street cop and family man, while a former supporting player, Jim True-Frost's Roland Pryzbylewski, goes to the head of the class as a new eighth grade teacher at beleaguered Edward Tilghman Middle School. It may take a couple of episodes to orient yourself to the Baltimore backrooms, squad rooms, classrooms, and street corners where The Wire's intense dramas play out, and new viewers may miss something in character nuance, but they will easily grasp the big picture. A politically motivated shake-up sends Major Crimes detectives Freamon (Clarke Peters) and Greggs (Sonja Sohn) to Homicide. The gloves come off in the mayoral race between black incumbent Clarence Royce (Glynn Turman) and idealistic white challenger Tommy Carcetti (Aidan Gillen). Gang leader Marlo (Jamie Hector) quietly and deliberately becomes the city's new drug kingpin, managing to subvert all surveillance efforts. Meanwhile, while "Prez" tries to reach his students, four highly at-risk kids will be drawn into the drug trade.

Mere synopsis does not do The Wire justice. The series deftly juggles its myriad storylines and characters, all of whom make an impression, from Marlo's cold-blooded enforcers, Snoop (Felicia Pearson) and Chris (Gbenga Akinnagbe), to boxing instructor "Cutty" (Chad L. Coleman), determined to keep his young charges off the corners. There is not a false note in the performances or the writing. Richard Price (Clockers) and Dennis Lehane (Mystic River) again contributed episodes. That this series has only been nominated for only one Emmy (for writing) is a travesty. As engrossing as the finest novels and in a class by itself, this isn't television; it's The Wire. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Better and better   February 21, 2010
M. Cox (Liverpool, UK)
If you haven't caught up with this show yet, get yourself into it from the first season. This fourth one looks more at the politics of Baltimore and the education. Shivers down your spine for some fantastic moments in this season. A lot easier to get into than the first season, even though there are a lot of new characters, but as with all the previous, they are three dimensional and totally believable. A fantastic TV show that deserves a place in history.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest series ever   February 10, 2010
May Williams (London UK)
The Wire took over my life for about three months. I watched it long into the early hours until it become an obsession. Season four had the greatest impact on me - so much that I was really upset for the child characters. In my opinion you will not find a greater tv series and I doubt that the quality cast will ever find work as great as this to act in. Criminally overlooked, this show should have cleaned up at every award ceremony.

I'm not sure if you have to be of a certain mind to take this show in. Bad language, occasionally violent and the odd sex scene, but it's intelligent. I know it left some people cold as they did not get it. You have to listen carefully as there is a lot to take in but it's worth it. The dvds are great with lots of commentaries from the production team and cast. Buy the whole lot now and watch alone!

continues the excellent series where 4 left off, not as much Mcnulty as the wife would like but still very entertaining and thought provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely excellent   January 7, 2010
Debs (Leeds)
If you haven't watched the first 3 seasons of The Wire then DO! But if you genuinely don't have time, this is an excellent box set in itself. Mix of drugs, tribal warfare and politics melded together in one amazing drama. The bonus features add to it, as it appears that what is portrayed is pretty accurate for Baltimore, and not just for dramatic effect. Don't forget the subtitles cos it's fairly hard-going otherwise, with the street language. And look out for the SHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTT - classic.
Buy it watch it enjoy it. THE WIRE is brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch?   November 11, 2009
C. Fennell (Nottingham, England)
It is this series lack of regard for formula and what has gone before that makes it the undoubted masterpiece it is. Season four virtually dispenses with an actual wire storyline as well as sidelining its so called lead actor (the amazing Dominic West) to almost a cameo role and focusing almost exclusively on previously supporting player Prez and his students in his new teaching role.
The switch is especially refreshing in todays "Get a formula and stick to it" mode of proramming. It gives the brilliant cast, oldies and newcomers alike, a chance to shine. I must give special mention to the 4 main newcomers, the boys on the front of the case, each of them gives incredible turns and each shows a range from touching and hilarious and the start and wounded and tragic at the end.
I really cannot praise this series highly enough. As a whole the Wire is the best piece of dramatic telivision I have ever seen and season four is the best of the best.
