Amazon.co.uk Review The Wire is one of those programmes where the increasing number of people who seem to passionately recommend it are simply not wrong. For buried underneath a mountain of praise, and talk of it being one of the finest television shows of all time, is a staggering piece of work, one that slowly but surely takes a look at the many facets of the drugs trade, centred in the city of Baltimore. Series by series, we spend time with the cops, the dealers, the media, local politicians, the education system and more, as The Wire gives each careful treatment, and a three-dimensional portrayal. It also paints a picture of a city in real trouble, with Baltimore one of The Wire’s uncredited stars. But where the show really delivers is in the characters it creates and moulds, and the very real troubles and challenges each of them must face. The show’s detailed strokes are even more compelling than the broader picture it paints. Enhanced by a series of non-showy performances in front of the camera, and some immaculate writing behind, The Wire really is that proverbial real deal. It’s genuinely unpredictable (characters of all sizes find themselves ruthlessly bumped off when you least expect them to), fearless in its tackling of certain subjects, and is that very masterpiece that an increasing army of champions of The Wire suggest it is. The five series contained here are genuinely American television at its very finest, right through to the final scene. Mesmerising television. --Simon Brew

The greatest TV show by a distance July 24, 2010 Cameron Spinks After purchasing series 1 on it's own and found it to be a brillantly entertaining. After this I bought the complete series rather than having them in single series. One of the greatest decisions I made as I was finishing a series and having to see the next straight away.
I won't go into huge detail but the characters, writing, city, acting, music, and themes are amongst the greatest I have ever witnessed. I fell in love with Baltimore and it's inhabititants. The writers never fear killing of major characters and you feel sorry for the most dangerous men in Baltimore. In The Wire you don't simply see them from the police's perspective, you actually get inside their worlds and see their struggles.
The dialect of Baltimore is a difficult and entertaining one. I watched every series with subtitles but I didn't actually need them after the first couple of episodes. It just helped me miss none of the brillant dialogue.
Of all the series, 4 was a personal favourite and 5 the worst. That said 5 is still better than anything else about. At the end of series 5 I was disapointed, not by the story but that such brillance had finished also that in the end Baltimore was stuck in a circle of endless despair.
If you want a brillant TV series look no further. The Wire is the greatest TV show of all time.
The best ever TV programme July 20, 2010 R. Andersson (Naxos, Cyclades Greece) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have watched The Wire three times now. It is totally engrossing and enthralling. The scripts are superb and very true to life in that section of society in Baltimore at that time. Dominic West as McNulty is superb and is ably supported by the rest of the cast. It is violent but the violence is that usually involved in dealing drugs at street level. One tip : use the subtitles. The accents and the idiom the characters use can be difficult to understand. Buy it, watch it and enjoy it. Reid Anderson
Best TV Series ever June 6, 2010 Richard Davies (Warrington, UK) I had heard that 'The Wire' was the best TV drama series ever. Well it hasn't disappointed. Take the time to get to know the characters and appreciate being 'in the know' when later series refer to earlier events, and characters - who may well have 'passed on'. It's a box set though! So be prepared to put the hours in! You won't regret it.
Fantastic - Realistic - Riveting June 1, 2010 Antyllus (London, UK) Not since watching British made The Take [DVD] [2009] have I seen such a good, spellbinding and realistic series.
The Wire, a five series American television drama set and produced in Baltimore, Maryland. It was created, produced, and primarily written by author and former police reporter David Simon - it shows; the guy knows what he is talking about. If you have ever watched 'the first 48 hours' on tv, a US series depicting solving real murders, then you know this comes as close as you can get.
I was riveted to my sofa and glued to my screen for an entire bank-holiday weekend following the broad facet of human life unfold before me. Each series covers a different aspect of Baltimore's corrupt and perverted criminal underbelly:
-illegal drug trade,
-port system,
-city government and bureaucracy,
-school system, and
-print news media.
The large cast character actors are little known for any other roles. However, each of them delivers outstanding portrayals, particularly the younger actores in series one. Outstanding acting also from Dominic West as Detective Jimmy McNulty (Dominic West)and Lance Reddick as Lieutenant Cedric Daniels, in the role of Shakima "Kima" Greggs is Sonja Sohn and many more. Several prominent real-life Baltimore figures either had small roles in the series or acted as advisors.
Despite not being a large commercial success or winning major television awards, The Wire has been described by critics as the greatest television series ever made. Yet, this series is acclaimed for its realistic portrayal of urban life and deep exploration of sociopolitical themes. It represents a fantastic visual novel, and like any good book you can hardly put it aside.
Worthwhile your money - I highly recommend this series!

Raises the issues May 31, 2010 Mdem (London) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is now my favourite TV series of all times. I am a fan of the Sopranos, but the Wire takes things to another level completely.
A friend kept on harping on about the series, and persuaded me to watch it. I borrowed Season one from her, watched the first episode, and wondered what the fuss was about. I felt overwhelmed, as I couldn't take in all the different characters, and realised that I had to be alert. It wasn't until I had got to the third episode, that I got into it. If you are having difficulty staying with the series, hang on in there. I got hooked, and stayed up until three or four in the morning, to figure out what would happen next.
It is great having the DVD's because you can watch the show at your leisure, or watch a whole season in one sitting. You also have the benefit of watching the commentaries with the Dvd's, and learning about the cast eg. D'angelo is married to the reporter Alma(Baltimore Sun) in real life, and the Deacon character used to be a Heroin trafficker, who was investigated by Ed Burns.
I liked the fact that the show was realistic, and raised some very difficult issues. It was fascinating to watch how all the different institutions were interlinked. Season four which examines the education system, pulled at my heartstrings. I loved the four boys Namond, Randy, Michael, and Dukie. What happens to Dukie in Season 5,was tragic.
My hero was Omar. I found it hilarious, when Omar was up in arms, after his grandmother was shot on a Sunday. Still trying to figure out the logic of his moral code. I have other favourite characters, Bubbles, Lester, Brother Mouzone, Clay Davis, Colvin, McNullty,D'angelo, and Bunk.
The show made me think a lot, and was realistic. I don't know whether anything can measure up to this now, and am in mourning.
