Sherlock Holmes - Complete Collection August 20, 2010 CarolineC 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As the box says, Jeremy Brett is the definitive Holmes. This box set contains all the series' he made. There are no extras, which is a pity, but the episodes are brilliant.
The box is nice and compact so it taks up much less space on the shelf than getting each series individually.
Well worth getting for anyone that loves detective stories in general and especially for those how love Holmes.Sherlock Holmes - Complete Collection [DVD]
Jeremy Brett the definitive Sherlock Holmes August 10, 2010 Forest (Lancashire, England) It doesn't matter how many new Sherlock Holmes there are, nor does it matter how new technology is exploited in the newer version, there's only one version of Sherlock Holmes that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has ever wrote and only one definitive Sherlock Holmes - the late Jeremy Brett.
Thank you very much, Mr. Brett. RIP
Unsurpassed... August 9, 2010 Aidan Clark (Edinburgh) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
For me, Jeremy Brett is in a league shared by just a few others, of literary creations personified almost to perfection. Of course, Basil Rathbone's portrayal has a good deal of period charm, but in terms of accuracy of character, Jeremy Brett is, to me, the quintessential Holmes. Like David Suchet (TV's Hercule Poirot), Brett consumed himself in as much of the author's work as possible. Never fully a hero, Conan Doyle's detective was always an eccentric genius, which no-one else on camera has portrayed, in my opinion. I compare his portrayal to Suchet's Poirot, or Joan Hickson's Miss Marple. Unsurpassed performances which stand the test of time. As I write, IMDB scores this production at 9.1 out of 10. I cannot conceive of a more complete and dedicated portrayal of Holmes ever to come our way again.
Excellent DVD, superb content July 19, 2010 Fotios Stamatelopoulos (Greece) In my opinion the best Sherlock Holmes TV series. Jeremy Brett *is* Sherlock! Excellent transfer to DVD.
Sometimes better than Doyle July 15, 2010 Lars S 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have read the short stories in parallell with watching this series, and I must say that sometimes the DVD's are an improvement on Doyle. I know this is heresy, but there you have it. Brett is of course fantastic and so are the other actors. Even small roles are brilliantly cast. I would give it ten stars if it weren't for the obnoxious piracy message you get every time you want to watch an episode.
