5 out of 5 stars A hotch-potch of historical innacuracy and farce...   July 2, 2010
originalisa (England)
The problem is that from series one onwards it has proved to be a superbly entertaining drama. It is well produced, well casted, well directed and a well acted drama. The cast have a real feel for their parts and as such it is nothing short of brilliant... as an entertaining drama. However. . .

I am reviewing this from series one onwards: Many of the costumes are Elizabethan and not Tudor. Victorian carriages are used in some scenes and it gets worse: Henry VIII's sister Margaret marries the King of Portugal whereas in reality she married the King of Scotland, how could they make such a dire mistake as that? They get their Popes mixed up also and have it that it was Pope Paul III who opposed the move that led to the creation of the church of England. The Pope who refused to let Henry VIII divorce his first wife was actually Paul's predecessor, Clement VII. They demolish, root and branch the character of one of our great early English composers - Thomas Tallis who is portrayed as a wretched, scruffy, languid, insipid character, a creature of dark shadows and a homosexual but there is no evidence to suggest he was any of these things. Their destruction of him is reprehensible. They include a purely fictional so called Anna Buckingham who is obviously based on Anne Stafford, Lady Hastings who was in reality the Duke of Buckingham's sister, however in the series she is portrayed as his daughter and a woman of relaxed moral virtue! There are just so many glaring inaccuracies, they go on and on and on, I can't list them all.

There are lots of bawdy intimate sexual scenes involving Henry VIII and his mistresses engaging in a variety of lascivious acts which appear somewhat over dramatised to say the very least. Henry VIII is shown all the way through to be a supremely fit, six pack male with boundless sexual energy and never puts on weight when in fact he expanded to around 20 stone and had a 54 inch waistline in his later years as was noted in the Holbein painting. Throughout the series he has no trouble mounting women in the bedroom scenes, but in fact in his later years he couldn't mount his horse without being hoisted up.

To sum it all up it is all about entertainment and to that end it is superb. It was made essentially for an American audience so it had to contain dazzle, gloss and spin at the expense of historical accuracy. At least it doesn't contain the all too familiar can of a certain American fizzy drink plonked on a table, label facing outwards - they did spare us that! And then again, we hear that so few people read history these days that not many will notice all the errors anyway. Perhaps in series four they will have old Henry travelling in a chauffeur driven Rolls, swigging from the familiar red can.

4 out of 5 stars 4*** or maybe 5***?   May 31, 2010

This programme is simply very good. The acting is too a very high standard and I dont think anyone could have acted Henry 8th better than Jonathen Rhys Meers - he is just excellent. The plots are very well thought out during the film and the whole thing os just very good. The only reason it didnt get 5***** is because sometimes the scenes can get a bit longwinded and a bit boring however altogether this is a very good series and one that everyone should watch. And I would like to add it was actually very historically accurate.

This season is either as good as the first two or better. It has a slightly faster pace to the story and is very watchable.

3 out of 5 stars A huge disappointment but a must have for the collection   May 13, 2010

After the truimph of series two, I was absolutely wetting myself with excitement in anticipation of series three but, unfortunately, I was left a bit shortchanged.

Absolutely nothing is wrong with series three: the acting is still top notch, the scenery and costumes are first rate and the storyline is good. But, there is something missing. After two series of enjoying the chemistry between Rhys-Meyers and Dormer as Henry and Anne Boleyn, series three lacked a certain 'je ne sais quoi'.

I have to confess that the historical inaccuracies that did not trouble me before were starting to grate by season three. The whole Lady Misseldon storyline was unnecessary and I didn't think it added anything to the show. Whereas, previously, some inaccuracies added a bit of oompf to the plot the Lady Misseldon thing just seemed like a nonsensical add-on.

Series 3, literally whips through Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves and the emergence of Katherine Howard. Joss Stone features as Anne of Cleves and her performance is fair but she is outshadowed by the ghosts of Maria Donnelly and Natalie Dormer.

The other disappointing thing was the treatment of Cromwell's demise: his fall from grace happened too quickly (it seemed like minutes). Again, something was lacking in the portrayal of his demise and I can't quite fathom what.

Overall, if you're a fan, you must watch it so that you are prepared for series four but you may feel a bit disapointed with it's execution (no pun intended!)

5 out of 5 stars Superb!   April 27, 2010

I missed this series when it was broadcast. The dvd package has given me a chance to watch one of the most superb TV series ever produced. Can't wait for series 4! Amazon prices and delivery a day before their estimated date is very impressive-thanks Amazon!
