Amazon.co.uk Review The latest example of just how much a terrific documentary series can benefit from the Blu-ray format, Wonders Of The Solar System is a fascinating six-part series that simply looks stunning in high definition. Presented by Professor Brian Cox, the series takes time to investigate the solar system around us, and the many natural beauties contained within it. Across the episodes, Cox covers the likes of planets themselves, the rings of Saturn, the question of whether we’re alone in the universe, and the sun itself. What lifts Wonders Of The Solar System above the many shows that have tackled the subject before, however, are two factors. Firstly, it’s Cox himself, an enthused and interesting host, who explains things well and really helps make accessible the material. Secondly, it’s the utterly stunning visuals. The BBC has mixed in CGI along with images sent directly from space to quite breathtaking effect. And this, inevitably, is where the Blu-ray kicks in. Wonders Of The Solar System simply looks wonderful in high definition, with the visuals coming across terrifically well. On DVD, this all looked very impressive. Here, it’s simply brilliant, and the end result is a series that can sit alongside Planet Earth as an example of just what Blu-ray can do for material of this quality and ilk. --Jon Foster

Worth the price of my TV license. September 7, 2010 Mr. Nobuyuki Yamaguchi (london) Wonders is one of those programs that BBC wheels out once in a while that genuinely makes paying the TV license worthwhile. and then the cost of the DVD on top of that. It's a physics program, but not the kind you got shown at school. The genius is in the way the program is put together, the shots, the music, and the fascinating narrative that sucks you into what could have been a very dry subject. Brian Cox is the perfect presenter, bringing you mind boggling facts, and placing them into the context of this wonderful solar system that we inhabit.
Not playable in North America September 3, 2010 markx 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
Product description has no mention of the format the disks are in. It's 1080i/50Hz, which is generally not playable in North America. Return shipping cost makes it not worth while to return. Anyway, learned my lesson.
A beautiful, passionate series of science! September 3, 2010 Mr. Christopher Stevens (Somerset, United Kingdom) Whenever I watch series based on Space I always finish them wanting to know more.
Allow your senses to be hugged with this mild series, yet truly passionate Science.
It is (bare in mind), not full of the Action-Science (as I like to call it) that some Science series' portray. No repeated explosion-cycles here! It is designed for an evening watch, a wind down and relax series.
Professor Cox really does plunge us into this truly beautiful interpretation of what the Solar System may contain.
However at points his passion may become just ever so slightly annoying, yet it does not butcher the series what-so-ever.
QUICKREAD:
PROS - Beautiful, good interpretations, good content, knowledgeable presenter.
CONS - Passion may be overplayed to some viewers and is a little over the top.
VERDICT - It's worth the buy.
Professor Cox - "Firestarter" September 2, 2010 Jimmy Stix (Sheffield, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There was a glowing ember inside of me, left over from the days when my father would take me in the back garden on cold winter nights and point out constellations like "The Plough" and "Orion". Professor Cox has blown on that ember and started a fire in me that threatens to become an obsession.
So many reviewers have praised this series so highly that I find it difficult to add anymore without covering the same ground. I will say this though, Professor Cox explains his joy and fascination for the awesome beauty of our Solar System in an easy to understand way that strikes just the right balance for everyone to enjoy.
I wish some of my teachers had been more like him!
Simply stunning!
AMAZING. September 1, 2010 T. Raynor (Sheffield, UK.) Nothing more to be said. If you enjoy anything about space and the solar system, you will LOVE this.
BUY IT. Incredible, just incredible.
